Air Conditioning

My husband and I bought a lake home in central Minnesota several years ago. We purchased the home during a very cool spring. The A-framed home did not have an air conditioning system; however there were two patio doors and several windows that faced the lake so we thought we would not need one. We were wrong. We moved into the house at the end of July of one of the hottest weeks on record. Not only was it warm in the house but the humidity from the air and lake had everything damp and musty smelling. The first night we spent in our new home I slept under the ceiling fan in the living room because we had no idea where our fans were. It was interesting sharing my space on the floor with our two cats that were trying to get cool also. We did not have all of our things unpacked before we were asking our new neighbours to recommend a dealer for an air conditioning system.

I think we could have dealt with the heat through the use of fans and opening windows, but the humidity was another story. We found that we were getting mould in the basement. Even our bread was moulding if we did not put it in the refrigerator. We knew that an air conditioning system would help to regulate the humidity in the house as well as the temperature.

We have crank out windows and the patio doors, so we did not even consider a window air conditioning system. The A-frame house also made a wall air conditioning system impractical for us. We called a heating and cooling specialist to evaluate our home. He did a cost analysis for us comparing using a mini-duct system and the traditional central air conditioning system. He recommended a the central air conditioning system which utilized the existing duct work from our furnace. The main cooling unit for the air conditioning system was placed on the north side of our home on the outside, so the system did not take any additional space inside the house. We were told that the placement of the air conditioning unit on the north side would help keep the unit itself cooler so that it would not have to work as hard. The specialist emphasized that it is very important to clean and replace filters on a regular basis so that the unit will run efficiently. By doing this the air conditioning system will not use as much electricity and will save money on the monthly cooling bill.

We found that understanding our system well and learning how to regulate the temperature inside our home has allowed us to run our air conditioning system in a very economical way. We are also much more comfortable and enjoy our lake home more fully.

Air conditioning systems are not necessary for all climates and locations. For example, they are very rarely used in San Francisco where my father lives, because the weather is usually mild. Although it can get very hot for a few weeks in the Summer, it is usually not so bad that the expense of owning, maintaining, and running an air conditioning system is warranted. Even in Berkeley and Oakland, which are farther from the water, and so get very hot – sometimes more than a hundred degrees – at some points, there are few air conditioners. I know, because I work in a coffee shop and during the summer it gets hot there!

The only places where you really need an air conditioning system are in places where it regularly gets into the 90s, or a place where it is slightly cooler, maybe in the 80s, but gets regularly very humid. If you live in Arizona or New Mexico, air conditioning may be a necessity. This is especially true if you are old or have a serious health condition. In heat waves during the summer, there is often a death toll, because some people simply need to keep cool or else they will die. So, if you are one of them then please, get an air conditioning system.

Air conditioning systems come in several types. There are, of course, the window mounted systems. These have a few advantages, but also a few disadvantages. One advantage is that they are cheap, and can often be found used but in good shape for as low as $40 or even less. They are also easy to install – just stick them in the window. This means that they don't need to be attached to a central heating and air conditioning system by a professional, which of course costs much more. The disadvantages of window mounted air conditioning is that it only cools one room. If you want to cool several rooms, then the cost quickly adds up. Also, they can be dangerous since, if they are improperly mounted, they can fall and injure, or even kill someone!

Another advantage of window mounted systems is that they are easy to maintain. Basically, all you have to do is scrub out the coils from time to time to make sure that mold is not growing in them, and take them in during the winter so that frost does not build up on the coils, if you are in some place where the temperature regularly drops below zero. But really, the best systems are central air ones because, even though they cost more, and have to be professionally installed and maintained, they cool the whole house at once. Unless you have a very small apartment, this is an obvious advantage.

Stay Cool This Summer With A New Air Conditioning System

Author: Daniel Tewkes

Article:
Air Conditioning In The 21st Century

Summer is now here and so are the heatwaves. With that in mind,
maybe it's time to invest in a new air conditioning system. It's
either that or sweat it out every summer, every year from this
point on. The only thing that concerns me is the prohibitively
expensive costs associated with buying an air conditioning
system.

Watch Out For Hidden Costs

We used to have an air conditioning system that expired in the
middle of last summer, at the height of a heatwave, so we got a
price on a new installation. Now what they don't tell you is
that the price quoted does not take certain things into account.
Go ahead and look up some prices online then come back to this
article.

Welcome Back

Did you look? You have to pay for installation, costing you
money in parts and labour, but not only that you may also have
to shell out for a complete overhaul of your existing
ventilation system. Are you sitting comfortably? The chances
are, if you are anything like me, you don't use your heater very
much, and as such it won't be in tip-top shape. Now don't worry
too much, but if you have a house built in a new development,
you may also not have properly sealed ducts. Prior to purchasing
a new air conditioning system, or heating and cooling system,
you may have to pay for those ducts to be professionally cleaned
and sealed. All these things serve to make the potential bill
much larger than you may anticipate. If the problem is really
bad, you may need them replaced altogether.

Window Mounted Air Conditioning?

A cheaper alternative would be a window mounted system. The
advantages of these is mainly cost. They have gotten a lot
cheaper and they also use a lot less energy than they used to.
This is a more economic option that has advantages and
disadvantages. One advantage is that you only pay out for the
room you want to be cool in. The disadvantage is the polar
opposite obvious one, which is that the rest of the house will
still be like a humid oven in the summer. Still, you can only be
in one room at any one time, so this would only be an issue if
the rest of your family also needed to be cool in the other
rooms in the house.

Title: The Benefits Of A Portable Air Conditioner

Author: Mark Gardner

Article:
An air conditioner that you can simply move from one area to
another is commonly known as a portable air conditioner.
Portable air conditioners provide an invaluable service for many
business and warehouse owners in particular, where employees
need constant air conditioning, wherever they happen to be
working.

The problem for a good deal of the larger warehouses is their
size; one air conditioning unit just won't be enough. In such
cases, these businesses will look to rent or buy portable air
conditioners to cool isolated work sections. Also, if the
employees do need to move to another location, they can simply
move the air conditioning unit too.

When looking at portable air conditioning units, you'll soon
notice that they use either Freon or evaporation technology. Air
conditioners that use the latest evaporation technology are now
the most popular, although you can expect to pay a little more
for them.

Of course, it's not only businesses that have a need for
portable air conditioners. Perhaps you are organizing an event
of some kind, maybe a friend or relative is getting married!
Whatever the situation, the fact is that a portable air
conditioner can quickly come to your aid and help you keep your
guests comfortable.

If you find yourself in need in need of a portable air
conditioner, whether short term or for an extended period of
time, then renting a portable air conditioner couldn't be
easier. You'll find that you can rent them for any length of
time, whether you need one for just the day or maybe a little
longer, perhaps months or even years! Mind you, if you are going
to need an air conditioner long term, you could always buy one!

Portable air conditioners are well known for their durability
and can cope with the most challenging of environments. Whatever
the location and whatever the task, you should be able to find a
portable air conditioner that is up to the task.
